How Long Does It Take to Complete an Online Certificate Program?

Online certificate programs range in length and completion time. Depending on the subject and area of study, certification programs can take anywhere from several months to one year to complete. For example, one online paralegal certificate program can take seven to nine months to complete, while others can be spaced out over 17 months or longer. The time frame usually depends on the amount of courses taken per semester or quarter. A paralegal certificate program covers a wide range of courses and training to prepare students for a quick entry into the profession. Another certificate program that may be of interest to a student with many credentials, is a post-masters certificate, such as Capella University’s college and online teaching certificate. This teaching certificate is offered through the College of Education, and credits earned can be used toward one of their PhD programs. The program is split up into quarter credits, with six required classes that can be taken one, two or three at a time. Each quarter is 10 weeks long, therefore, a student taking two classes a quarter would be done in 30 weeks and be on their way to teaching college students. Be aware that many programs are designed to be taken as directed, with prerequisites, introductory and core classes. A program’s flexibility may determine how long it is going to take you to finish. Some online schools offer accelerated certificate programs that allow you to speed up the process and enter the workplace quicker.

Other factors affect the pace in which your certificate is earned, such as personal finances and work. Students who are low on money may only be able to take one class per semester, or have to attend part-time programs to continue paying for their certificate program. Others may be working so much that they do not have enough time to focus on their classes. While these are all legitimate concerns for students in an online certificate program, there are ways to make school more affordable and keep students enrolled. Thankfully, accredited colleges that offer online certificate programs are eligible to participate in Federal student financial aid programs. These programs offer loans, grants and scholarships to help students pay for their tuition and other college expenses.
